Fact Vs. Fiction

NASA Has Figured Out How the World Will End- And It's Totally Terrifying.
Earth will ultimately be vaporized by a dead Sun. Mercifully, we won't be around to experience it.
(Meant only for thinkers, seekers and science- students; definitely not for the religious deaf and blind.)
The destruction of a solar system has been captured for the first time by astronomers who said the violent events provide a grim glimpse of Earth’s ultimate fate.
Images taken by NASA’s Kepler 2 space mission reveal the rocky remains of a world that is being torn apart as it spirals around a dead star, or white dwarf, in the constellation of Virgo, 570 light years from Earth.
Scientists spotted chunks of shredded planet swinging around the white dwarf every 4.5 to five hours, placing them in an orbit about 520,000 miles from the star, about twice the distance between the Earth and the moon.
“This is something no human has seen before,” said Andrew Vanderburg at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. “We’re watching a solar system get destroyed.”
Sun-like stars are driven by nuclear reactions that transform hydrogen into helium. But when the hydrogen runs out, they burn heavier elements, such as helium, carbon and oxygen, and expand dramatically. Eventually, the star sheds its outer layers to leave an Earth-sized core known as a white dwarf.
Vanderburg’s team spotted the cosmic catastrophe with the Kepler 2 mission, which can detect the existence of new planets by the telltale dimming they cause when they pass in front of their parent stars.
Instead of looking at sun-like stars, the scientists studied a white dwarf known in astronomical circles as WD1145+017. They found that every 4.5 hours, Kepler 2 detected a 40 percent drop in light from the star, as a chunk of material moved across its face.
Initial observations from Kepler were backed up with further measurements from other telescopes, including the Whipple Observatory in Massachusetts, the MEarth-South telescope in Chile and the Keck Observatory in Hawaii. Together, they found evidence for several lumps of rock in orbit around the dead star.
“We now have a smoking gun linking white dwarf pollution to the destruction of rocky planets,” Vanderburg said.
Astronomers are not clear where the rocky objects came from in the first place, but one possibility is that the star’s death destabilised the orbit of a neighboring massive planet in such a way that smaller rocky worlds were kicked towards the star. They get so close that the searing heat starts to vaporise them as the gravitational forces tear them apart.
A similar fate may well await our own solar system. When the sun dies in five billion years, it will expand and engulf the inner planets, toasting Mercury and Venus, and potentially Earth too. But if Earth survives that cosmic trauma, it may find itself being shredded as it spirals into the white dwarf that the sun becomes. “We might be seeing how our own solar system could be disassembled in the future,” said Vanderburg.
Francesca Faedi, an astronomer in the University of Warwick, said the death of the star Vanderburg’s team observed may have sent planets in the distant solar system crashing into one another, reducing them to rocks that resemble asteroids.

The Pope arrives in heaven, where St. Peter awaits souls.
St. Peter asks who he is.
Pope: "I am the Pope."
St. Peter: "Who? There's no such name in my book."
Pope: "I'm the representative of God on Earth."
St. Peter: "Does God have a representative?
But he didn't tell me..."
Pope: "I am the leader of the Catholic Church..."
St. Peter: "The Catholic church...Never heard of it...
Wait, I'll check with the boss."
Pope: "That's the biggest church on the planet among innumerable
other little- known minuscule churches".
St. Peter walks away through Heaven's Gate to talk to God.
St. Peter: "There's a dude standing outside who claims he's your representative on earth."
God: "I don't have a representative on earth, not that I know of...
Wait, I'll ask Jesus." (calls out for Jesus)
Jesus: "Yes father, what's up?"
God and St. Peter explain the situation.
Jesus: "Wait, I'll go outside and have a chat with that fellow."
Ten minutes pass and Jesus re- enters laughing aloud.
After a few minutes St. Peter asks Jesus why he's laughing...
Jesus: "Remember that fishing club I started 2000 years ago?
It's still in operation!"
Thanks.

I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as the fingerprint and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service- helping out the needy and the less fortunate. Then work hard and allow the energy of the universe to lead you...
On the other hand there are religious goofs trying to subvert the cosmic energy by falsely introducing inundated concepts on which the edifice of present day fanaticism and fascism are built. History will not forgive those counterfeits.
---To err is only human for them but to forgive is not their policy, and so---
"I went to an Inter-Faith Integration Seminar. The bishop came, laid his hands on my hand and prayed, "By the will of Jesus Christ, you will walk today!" I smiled and told him I am not paralyzed. The Buddhist Monk came, held my hands and declared, "By the will of the great Buddha, you will walk today!" I was less than amused when I told him there is nothing wrong with me. The Mullah came, snatched my hands and said, "Insha Allah, you will walk today!" I snapped at him, "There's nothing wrong with me!" After the Seminar, I stepped outside and found my new car having been stolen. Now I believe in the equality of all religions!"

Jose Prakash What is the role of Kanjirappally bishop there ,? Also he has not worn the ceremonial dress . Is it a show of 'Equmenism' ?
UnlikeReply1October 4 at 9:56pmEdited
Adv Alex Abraham Odikandathil I too would think its a show off but know not of what category. 'Inferior' may explain it. "Affliction's sons are brothers in distress; A brother to relieve, how exquisite the bliss!" - Robert Burns.
Jose Prakash While proclaiming 'Equmenism' our Bishops will not allow or approve Interchurch marriages.( Mar.Mathew Arackal is our bishop) .Equmenism is finely utilising in the field of exploitation through educational institutions run by churches . The association is termed as Inter Church Council !
Adv Alex Abraham Odikandathil I agree, Prakash. 'World Council of Churches' is another big humbug. Voltaire has rightly said that once the people begin to reason, all will be lost.

What makes effective 'altruism'?
Its definition is “a philosophy and social movement which applies evidence and reason to determining the most effective ways to improve the world.”
Philosophy, and more specifically practical ethics, has played an important role in effective altruism’s development, and effective altruism shows that philosophy is returning to its Socratic role of challenging our ideas about what it is to live an ethical life to make the world a better place.
Effective altruism is based on a very simple idea: we should do the most good we can. Obeying the usual rules about not stealing, cheating, hurting, and killing is not enough, or at least not enough for those of us who have the good fortune to live in material comfort, who can feed, house, and clothe ourselves and our families and still have money or time to spare. Living a fully ethical life involves doing the most good we can.
Most effective altruists are pragmatic realists, not saints, so very few claim to live a fully ethical life. Most of them are somewhere on the continuum between a minimally acceptable ethical life and a fully developed ethical life. Effective altruists don’t see a lot of point in feeling guilty. They prefer to focus on the good they are doing. Some of them are content to know they are doing something significant to make the world a better place. Many of them like to challenge themselves to do a little better this year than last year.
Effective altruism is notable from several perspectives.
First, and most important, it is making a difference in the world. Already the movement is directing tens of millions of dollars to charities that are effectively reducing the suffering and death caused by extreme poverty.
Second, effective altruism is a way of giving meaning to our own lives and finding fulfillment in what we do. Many effective altruists say that in doing good, they feel good. Effective altruists directly benefit others. Indirectly they often benefit themselves.
Third, effective altruism sheds new light on an old philosophical and psychological question: What is it that drives some of us to look beyond our own interests and the interests of those we love to the interests of strangers, future generations, and animals?
Effective altruists do things like the following: living modestly and donating a large part of their income- often much more than the traditional tenth, or tithe- to the most effective charities; researching and discussing with others which charities are the most effective or drawing on research done by other independent evaluators; choosing a career in which they can earn most, not to live affluently but to do more good; talking to others- in person or online about giving so that the idea of effective altruism will spread; giving part of their body- blood, bone marrow, even a kidney- to a stranger which practice is gaining momentum in our little state of Kerala. And even this write-up comes within the ambit of altruism.
Be cautious: Philanthropy is a very large industry.
A large number of these charities are outright fraudulent, mainly run by religions
to advance their vicious ends.
Thank you.

Truth Bleeds...

Where the hell is Kerala heading for?
In today's so-called "democratic" election process, "Big Money" doesn't talk, it roars- usually drowning out the people's voice if yesterday's election to local bodies is any indication. The money spent on that election is estimated to be at least Rs.10,00,00,00,000...
Bizarrely, it seems to have been decreed that money is a form of "free speech". Thus people and corporations are allowed to spend unlimited amounts "to speak" in election campaigns- perniciously much of that money is looted from the people through corruption in government. But wait- if political speech is measured by money, then by definition speech is not free. It can be bought, thereby giving the most speech to the corrupt few with the most money.
That's plutocracy, not democracy

What is 'Indoctrination'?
It presupposes the intent to convert someone to a certain ideology. As with words like “doctrine,” “docent,” and “doctor” (sorry M.Ds), the Latin root of “indoctrinate” is docere, “to teach.” As humans have long acknowledged, when we teach, we necessarily impart some combination of facts and value judgments, just as any other intellectual exercise- a study, a trial, an essay, a presentation- requires us to shape or frame the knowledge we want to investigate or communicate. Whether it flatters the liberal or the conservative, there’s no such thing as “raw data,” no such thing as a purely unbiased or un-ideological stance. There are only degrees of measure, of fairness, of critical thinking. The idea that college students are indoctrinated neglects the fact that college students are capable of thinking for themselves.
Critics see that the introduction of a program of rigorous critical thinking by a liberal professoriate has the potential to challenge the assumptions and beliefs of young people who show up at college for an education, and they call it indoctrination. What’s actually happening is that those- certainly not all- young people who show up in colleges having already been indoctrinated- in the strict sense of the word- are being given a framework for thinking more carefully and deliberately for themselves, along with the relative freedom to do so in an environment designed to privilege reason, evidence, and skepticism over assumption, innuendo, opinion and unchallenged faith.
Yes, most eminent professors are liberal.
The fact that liberal people work on campus and liberal things happen on campus doesn’t mean college courses are instruments of liberal indoctrination.
It simply means college students have the ability to think for themselves.
Thank you.

An apology to the Serenity Prayer:
I deny having gray hair.
Those are ‘wisdom highlights’ if you chance to see any.
Old age comes at a very bad time when none is young enough
to embrace it.
In my age, ‘getting lucky’ means walking into a room and
remembering why I went in there, I admit.
Last month I joined a support group for procrastination.
It is yet to meet, though.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for
ten minutes to come out wrinkle- free and three sizes smaller?
The biggest lie I tell myself- ”I don’t need to write it down, I’ll remember it".
Yet when my kid text me 'plz' which is shorter than please,
I text back ‘no’ which is shorter than yes.
Do I quite need anger management?
Better yet, let people stop pissing me off.
My people skills are fine, my boy.
It’s my tolerance of idiots that needs improvement.
And my benevolence, restraint.
When did it change from “We the people” to “Screw the people?”
Of course I talk to myself for, (sometimes) I need expert advice.
Oh Lord, grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the right friends to post bail when I finally snap.
Thanks.
Bindu Mammen Your wisdom highlights are showing, sir, it has got the power to change the prayer too.,

What is that Jacob Thomas did?
1. As the second-in-command of the Vigilance Department, he took cognizance of corruption involving hundreds of crores of rupees and abuse of governmental power and filed charges against criminals, not caring for their status.
SHOULDN'T HE HAVE DONE IT?
2. He is being hunted down by the State Government which is part and parcel of the corruption he investigated into. They transferred him from post to pillar and even demoted him- all as rewards for his honest job. He made a mention of it.
SHOULDN'T HE HAVE DONE IT?
3. When the Vigilance Court supported his view by finding that there is ample proof to proceed with the case as against closing it, which the State Government wanted, he told a journalist that he framed the case as there was prima facie evidence in the case.
SHOULDN'T HE HAVE DONE IT?
4. He desisted answering further questions by showing a duct tape suggesting that he is closing his mouth (not that of others') and that he does not want to talk further on it. I remember when Indira Gandhi declared Emergency, many newspapers went underneath, but those which had a heritage to speak of, published the daily with an Editorial that was a blank column- no words since silence is the strongest argument to refute!
SHOULDN'T HE HAVE DONE IT?
5. He still asks, "what shall I explain?", meaning there are no specific allegations against him in the show-cause notice, served by the Chief Secretary.
SHOULDN'T HE HAVE DONE IT?

Now, what is that Jacob Thomas did not do?
1. He believes in truth, honesty and justice; conducts himself in a dignified manner and believes in the inherent power of the different offices he adorned for safeguarding the interests of the people at large- the masters in any democracy.
SHOULD HE HAVE BEEN A COWARD?
2. He was conscious of the dignity of his position as the State ADGP and did not compete to lubricate corrupt politicians and the upper hierarchy of civil and police echelon.
SHOULD HE HAVE BEEN PLAYING SECOND FIDDLE?
3. He did not accept a portion of the bribe which would have run into several crores and if turned into real estate property, he could have lived merrily thereafter.
SHOULD HE HAVE BEEN A THIEF/ A GANGSTER?
4. Having ultimate faith in TRUTH, he reiterated the universal truth that TRUTH will finally succeed.
IS THAT A SIN?
Mahatma Gandhi said,
“In matters of conscience, the law of the majority has no place,” and
“Truth stands, even if there be no public support. It is self-sustained.”
To conclude, "Satyameva Jayate" (Sanskrit: सत्यमेव जयते; lit. "Truth alone triumphs.") is a mantra from the ancient Indian scripture Mundaka Upanishad. Upon independence, it was adopted as the national motto of India and it is inscribed at the base of the national emblem. (The emblem is an adaptation of the Lion Capital of Ashoka which was erected around 250 BCE at Sarnath, near Varanasi in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh). It is inscribed on all currency notes and national documents.
For those bonsai Congress off-shoots who haven't seen or heard of it:

Analyzing S.7:
Mr. Jacob Thomas (1) did not broadcast over radio, (2) did not communicate over public media or in any document anonymously or pseudonymously . He may have made a public utterance or a statement of opinion about the universal truth that "truth ultimately triumphs" based on the verdict of the Vigilance Court. But that is not against any government nor should it embarrass the relations between the Central and State Govts or a foreign govt since we all believe that courts of law are constitutional seats of justice meant to uphold truth and mete out justice. Further, the exception cited in the last para applies cent percent in the present case, So, how does the action of Thomas Jacob IPS contravenes the All India Service (Conduct) Rules, 1968?
